ASK JEFF

How does my credit score affect my mortgage?

A straight answer to a real question.

Credit score can affect eligibility, interest rate, points, mortgage insurance, and the amount of flexibility available in a loan program. It is not the only factor. Lenders also review income, employment, debts, assets, down payment, occupancy, and the property.

Do not assume you must reach a perfect score before asking questions. A mortgage review can show whether the current score works, whether a different program fits, and whether a small, targeted improvement could materially change the loan.
